Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Very happy as usual, the online process to order services is simple and the various vendors/companies are always quick to respond and we've never had to wait more than 2 days for repairs to made. I'm so happy that we chose to keep our AHS coverage years after we weren't required to do so. It's paid for itself over the past 5+ years. Very happy with AHS's services.

Consumers beware!!!! I called because I hear a noise in my AC unit. Had a tech come out, he told me that there was nothing wrong and recommended something I had never hear of, so i told him I would get a second opinion . I called out two other companies that were not in their network and paid for them out of my own pocket. They told me that the system needed to be replaced. I called AHS and like other customers was on hold 2 hours. After getting some one, them told me I could get second opinion but they had get in touch with the tech so I asked for a supervisor and was told someone would call me back. Called back next day and was told system was down. Got a call back and was told still... Read More

For the years I have had to activate my policy with American Home Shield a number of times. On one occasion I was not pleased with the repair service that was sent to my home. I called American Home Shield and explained why I was displeased and they sent out another contractor who was excellent. I was totally pleased with the resolution to my problem. Not only would I recommend AHS to family and friends, I have already done that. I also advise associates to get a policy when they are moving into a new home BEFORE anything goes wrong. This is a service that everyone needs to have whether they are owning or renting a home.

We moved into an older home, that is the whole reason we decided to go with an extended warranty through you guys. The evaporator coil went out in the interior unit - as such, we lost all Freon. I don't appreciate that I had to pay for all of it out of pocket - to the tune of $1000 (and that's after the service company gave me a break on it, or it would've been $1200). All in all, to assume you guys spent less on the repair than I did is pretty disheartening. Furthermore, I understand it is your service provider's job to only report the bare minimum, otherwise they wouldn't be a recommended provider - but this is the third time they've come out. It is frustrating to continue to just... Read More

The company assigned to fix our malfunctioning water heater was knowledgeable and the plumber who came to our home was nice to work with. We had a problem that was not resolved the first time and required a second visit. Second Opinion Plumbing worked us into a busy schedule to provide relatively prompt service. I have at times been frustrated with an inability to talk with someone from Home Shield in a timely manner. Not everything can be done with voice mail and email messages. This experience, however, was a good one and we have generally found the service personnel who have responded to correct problems at our 30-year old home in San Antonio are professional and know what they're... As long as you have a decent vendor service you, shouldn't be an issue. One of the things I like from them, is at a vendor with General Electric. I highly recommend looking up the reviews for the vendors that they want to sent out. Another thing is to say that you need to have the replacement with the same features of post saying like Wichita

I have been a customer of American Home Shield for about 15r years covering 4 houses in 3 different cities. I have been extremely satisfied with their contractors and their efficiency over the years but I am totally disgusted with the length of time I have to hold on whenever I call to request service. Today, for example, I was on "hold" for 53 minutes until their automated recording told me my wait time would be approximately another 15 minutes. I hung up in anger, regained my composure, called back and waited another 58 minutes before anyone answered. This is totally unacceptable and I am exploring other home warranty companies.

Quality Electric in Fairfield County was superb. On time and fixed problem in moments, and explained the problem if it were to occur again.
