Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I would never recommend American Home Shield to anyone! It takes nearly 2 hours on hold to get substandard service. I called to have my refrigerator serviced in July and after 3 different companies, it's still not working! The supervisors refuse to speak with the customers or return calls. The incompetent repair companies that they contract lie on their reports. They give you the run around and aren't worth all of the money you spend. I am truly disappointed with my experiences with this company. I think you may be better off paying for repairs out of pocket instead of paying for the nothing you receive from this company!

I just canceled my coverage after year's of on-time payments, I called upon them twice and was denied because they said that the item wasn't covered (fine print)!!! Also the wait times on the phone are extremely long!!!

It has always been super easy to request service online. The problem is that they don't follow through and if it's something simple they might get it done in a couple of weeks. If it's something complicated (like a refrigerator...) it might take six months or more....terrible company and every time something happens you pray for a good tech, otherwise your problem just became more complicated.

What it gives you is a peace of mind. Many things, like A/C repairs are not covered to a very good extent, so count on shelling a lot of money out of your pocket. Similarly, codes change constantly, and AHS does not pay for bringing your existing appliances up to code. However, occasionally, it may be a good deal, for example replacing a spring on a garage door would cost you more than a $75 service call. So, as I am saying, it's an insurance.

I called about a leak from my kitchen sink. Professionals were there within 2 days, assessed the problem, and replaced my sink. It never cost more than the $75 fee. It would have been closer to $300, without American Home Shield . I'm very happy with AHS.

Over all we are happy with the insurance product AHS provides. It's a solid substitute for a property manager. If you buy their policy understand: 1. The coverage amounts in your policy. For an air conditioning unit they are limited and will be less, possibly far less than the cost of replacement. You will also be expected to pay for the 'gas' or freon for any repair that requires gas recharge or replacement. Check the details of your policy. The sales pictures on the website could be misunderstood. 2. The company is automated and runs very efficiently from the website. So rarely will you have to call them. As a result there are few people to actually interact with. It will be... Read More

I was told that the insurance would only pay for the cheapest disposal out there. Therefore my new disposal would not be the same quality as the old one. I was offered an upgrade, either $70 for middle of the range, or $150 for one identical to the one that was insured. I opted for the middle, not having anticipated it would cost me any more than the $75 call out fee. The new one cost $130, so it appears you would only stump up $60 for the replacement. Where were you going to get a disposal for $60? Something reconditioned? Also. I have put high end appliances in my home, and insured them with you. If my Bosch oven breaks, will you only replace it with the bottom of the line... Read More

I called to order a repair for my bathtub faucet leaking and my toilet leaking I was assigned Freedom Plumbing to come out and do the repairs he showed up at the house walked around for 20 minutes took the flapper off of the toilet and did nothing and laughed when I called to the Home Warranty company to find out what the status of my claim was they told me that he filed for removing the toilet and putting in a new ring and also a new kitchen faucet and replace to the cartridge in the bathtub he did absolutely nothing I tried to call them back several times to tell them that he did nothing and requested a copy of the signed service request that was forged because I never signed anything...
