Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

NO STARS So far my experience has been VERY POOR, AWFUL, HORRIBLE! It has been 5 weeks and my water heater still has not been replaced. 3 weeks passed before I was told that my water heater was under manufacturers warranty and that I was suppose to handle it and let them know when I had the new one. I was never told that it was under warranty or had to get it. I went through the roof and after sitting on hold for over an hour every time I call 2 more weeks have passed and they told me the contractor would let me know when they could fit me in. SATURDAY 7AM. I'm a realtor and have worked with many warranty companies. This is the worst so far. I met a repair man sent from another... Read More

They were quick to get me an appointment. That part went smoothly. However, I have a Carrier Infinity AC System. I understand that it is pricy to fix and most companies do not carry the part. So it took quite some time to get the AC fixed. That was not the issue. I had a two stage system. They replaced the part with a one stage system. I did not know they were doing that. It decreased the efficiency of my expensive AC System. I wish they would have given me the two options and allowed me to pay the difference to keep my better system. On top of that, the new, sub-par part required reworking some duct work which was entirely my financial responsibility. Bottom line it's... Read More

Patriot plumbing who is one of your vendors did not perform the job and made up the diagnosis... After requesting a second opinion the problem was resolved in their first trip unrelated to the original diangosis.

You need lots of patience with these people. I have three homes insured by them for the last two years. The phone wait times are ridiculous. I have waited 39 minutes and then the call just drops. But if you are going to renew they have someone on the line within 10 minutes. Ordering parts is another nightmare. Nothing seems to be urgent including AC problems. In one of my homes I waited two months for them to complete a plumbing problem. I made the mistake of paying for the entire year so I'm now stuck with them until the policy term is up. Looking for a new company. I'm also in total shock the scored so high.

DO NOT GO with AHS. They won't answer calls, keep you on hold forever. It's worse if you've given them your bank info because they can continue to deduct from your account. BE WARE!!!!! What's worse...not even the repair company will call back. Worst mistake I made.

Terrible waste of money! Do not pay them a penny of your hard earned money. I have had several problems just to get someone out here to look at issues not to mention the hour long hold times. Pay yourself the $60-70 a month and overtime you will have a good amount to cover any issue that happens. Majority of the time when I'd call to get something fixed, someone would show up (if they would show up) and tell me the reason they can't fix it. I still have a water leak, refrigerator leak and toilet that doesn't flush correctly. Plus I have to pay $100 to the person who comes out to tell me they can't do anything. Never again

Had my airconditioner repaired today. I live in California, so it is still quite warm. Great service. Repaired in a timely manner.

This company is horrible. Took 1 week to get a HVAC company to call to schedule an appt another 2 weeks out. Was told to find my own company and get reimbursed because they were overbooked and out of contractors. I wasn't reimbursed and the AC broke down again 2 weeks later.
