Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Your wait time on the telephone of 30 minutes to 1 hour for service is unacceptable for a company as large as you are. Having no call back service to me the customer is disappointing. Plus, charging the service call to my credit card BEFORE service is even given by a technician is in my opinion shady! I'm paying for a service not even rendered yet. Does that make sense? NO! I would not recommend your company to anyone at this point.

Horrible and terrible experience with AHS. Their call wait times are over 1 hour most of the time and their customer service is really bad. I am stuck with their contract unfortunately. I would never renew and never recommend this service to anyone.

Expect to wait 30 to 1hr 20 minutes before talking to anyone. I called to have my dishwasher repaired. Paid my $100 and when someone came out they said they could not find a problem. He cleaned it and said try again. We did and it was still broken. Next time he still could not find the problem so he ordered a new mother board. Came back out ti install it but it still did not work. Fourth time he came out he passed the buck by saying that it was the hot water heater not delivering enough hot water. My sink is right next to the dishwasher and the water is so hot you cannot leave your hands under it for more than a few seconds. Four months later its still not fixed and company refused to... Horrible horrible experience with AHS. Believe all the negative comments given. It’s all truth. I’m soooo tired of writing and voicing my complaints about this company. They lie to you. They take your money and then it’s not covered. It’s a sad sad joke. I’m looking for another home warranty company.

Absolute horrible experience working with American Home Shield. Customer service requires 1/2 to 1 hour wait almost every time we've called. Customer service reps are rude, dishonest and caught in multiple lies. Initially they reported to my wife our heat pump would not be covered. So, we paid two different companies to take a look and give quotes. Both said we needed the entire system replaced as both (outdoor and indoor) units are failing. Second company found a leak in the outdoor unit and fixed the leak. Our electric bills continued to be $8-$9 per day! So I contacted American Home Shield, and guess what, our heat pump is covered! So their company came out to look, found another leak... Read More

Plumber chosen by AHS caused over $6,500 damage to our floors. Plumber appears not to have had either insurance or funds. Numerous efforts to contact AHS were ignored. Collecting fees is their main customer concern. Never received direct contact of any kind. Improper installation was verified by another plumber sent by AMH a

Purchased AHS in 1994 and for 15 years had a perfect working relationship. However, I am in my fourth month of dishwasher resolution and have made decision to discontinue AHS service. Complacency, redundancy, and incompetence mindset is AHS's new philosophy. Unless you want to spend hours on hold (4 1/2 hours on hold in 2 day period) and willing to aggressively pursue repair resolution, avoid the headaches. Many other home warranty companies out there, some offering financial incentives. After dishwasher repair (hopefully b4 thanksgiving) GOOD RIDDANCE AHS.

First time I used AHS, it was for a water heater repair, they had to replace it. It took a little longer than it should have, but was replaced and contractor was good. Just had a problem with the refrigerator, contacted AHS, the next day a repairman was there to check it. Was not sure of the problem, did not hear from him, so I called 3 days later and they told me it needed a compressor and they had to order it and it would take over a week to get. Give me a break, it is a Frigidaire, very common and I live an hour and a half from Vegas. The refrigerator is only 1 1/2 years old, should not need a compressor. Finally got the compressor, came to fix it and fixed something else, it was not... Read More

By far the worst company I have ever dealt with. They send incompetent repair people who are either not certified for the brand of appliance they are repairing or simply don't diagnose the problem correctly. Took 5 service calls and 32 days to repair my refrigerator. Told me my dishwasher was not cleaning the dishes because I was not using a rinse aid. (Took 3 service calls to repair). When it came time to replace my HVAC unit, they were either dishonest or totally incompetent, gave me 3 quotes with a higher price each time, long list of items not covered, and tried to sell me 12 pounds of refrigerant (at about $100 per pound, not covered by the policy) when the system capacity was about...
