Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

They were better in the past. I now see that many of the contact companies are poorly rated. The Plumber they sent today was a 1 star on yelp. Job was first aid only. Left with cold shower and told that by damaging the valve by closing it, it was "abused" and that they would not cover. Catch 22, (I would not know it was a broken valve if it did work). Looked on yelp, very poor track record for AHS and Plumber. Will be talking to State Ins. Commissioner and TV news in A.M., the local public need be warned of this type of UNSURANCE>

I had AHS for several years. When it came time to file a claim, it was a disaster. Delayed response to get things fixed and poor customer service. It took 1 week for AHS response but it was too late. It taught me a lesson, all warranty companies just make money on people’s fears but never delivers when things breakdown. Read your contract. It’s better to save your money for home emergencies.

I would not recommend using AHS. I requested two services one for my thermostat (ref #430012062) with Summer Breeze Heating and Air. No one ever worked on anything in my house or even stepped foot in my house and I was billed for the service call by AHS. Now I am receiving past due bill notices for work that was not even done. I also had a service call for my washer (ref #430012052) through Jones Family Appliance. They came and fixed one thing but were waiting on a part to finish the rest and they never came back. I was also billed for that completed service call and the work was not finished. In addition, they are sending me overdue payment notices for work that was not finished. To make... Read More

Have contacted them on 3 different appliances , only one time have we had a technician actually show up . Once it was my ac drain clogged in the attic causing thousands of dollars in damage to my house , they put it on an emergency order , saying they will have someone out to look at it withon 24 hours . i fixed it myself ! No technician ever showed up and the company just gives excuses .

Horrible, horrible, horrible. Been with AHS over 15 years. Paid monthly, faithfully, yet when something breaks they send sub par contractors to put band aids on fixes. My house has sold and I can't wait until Nov 15th to cancel this contract.

I called to get my garage door opener repaired. Ace Garage Door came out and fixed it. Within a week it no longer worked. I called American Home Shield. I was on hold for over an hour. Then after the girl answered, she put me on hold for another 45 min. I requested that Ace come to repair the door again. No one ever called me or came out to fix the garage door. I called Ace and the man hung up on me. I cancelled by American Home Shield policy. I do not recommend them at all.

They really deserve less than zero. They are totally a ripoff company. They contract with the WORST "technicians". So far I've had to use them for my microwave, refrigerator and garage door. Every last single thing I've had them come out to fix the same "EXACT" thing is broken again but since it past the 60 day mark I have to pay another service fee of $75 dollars. After waiting on the phone for like an hour, pretty much the AHS customer service rep said there was nothing they could do but I can pay another $75 service fee to have a contractor come service my microwave and fridge, plus another $75 for my garage door; just to fix the same issue that I requested them for in the 1st... Can you give a ZERO? They contract with the WORST "technicians". My latest beef is with our A/C, which has been inoperable for two months now. The service technician said the system needs to be replaced at a cost of $16,000, or which AHS "covers" $11,000. AHS offered us $2500 to go away. When I asked them how they arrived at $2500, they said "it's proprietary. We will not tell you." Every firm that comes out to fix something finds something that is not covered that must be fixed before the warranty work will be done. They then install the lowest grade equipment they can find. AMERICAN HOME SHIELD ARE SCAMMERS. RUN AWAY!

To talk to a person to complain, plan to wait on hold for at least 30 minutes. I am waiting on the phone now for 55 minutes and it appears that the music stopped and I probably got disconnected. If you do finally get through, you'll get someone that is informationless and incapable of making a decision. They seem to be tolerant to hearing complaints. They probably received training on how to listen to complaints, but not do anything about it. They are worthless. I never was able to talk to a supervisor. Even when they call within the company it seems that they are placed on hold as well. There is no direct line and they don't offer it. The contractors that AHS hires are incompetent... Read More

I had them replace my hot water tank and said it was not the correct one and offered me a settlement of 700.00 . I had a plumber come in and replace it for 1200.00 and he said it was in correct and gave me a 6 year warranty. I had to pay the 125.00 service fee so it cost me 1325.00 for the new one. That was 625.00 out of my pocket not happy. I had to wait almost a week for them
