Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

American Home Shield has been a nightmare. Just know that if you get service and have to make a claim, allow 40 minutes to wait on the phone. If you want your situation elevated , if you're not happy with the way a representative is dealing with your situation, a lot of the time they will not give you a supervisor. You could have many, many companies coming to your house for one issue, and they still will not replace it. I did have my washing machine replaced after having to stay on top of them.. They do not seem to care. Their customer service is the absolute worst.

Be careful!!! American Home Shield (AHS) doubled my premium without any explanations, even though I have been with AHS for more than 10 years. I am very frustrated that the way they treated the loyal customer. PS AHS also do not let me submit the negative comments by preventing me login!!!

Add my name to the list of people who are frustrated with their lack of communication. They charged me $75 for a service call that I cancelled and there is no way to get in touch with them. No reply other than an automated twitter and facebook response and no phone contact with hold times beyond 30 minutes. I wonder how I can cancel other than stopping payment on my credit card which I am about to do.

This company is beyond terrible!!! I am done with them. Service person has been out three times since, Nov. 6th, and my dishwasher is still leaking. The dishwasher is 21 yrs old, it is obviously not fixable! It should be replaced. They guarantee replacement if the appliance is not able to be repaired. Another thing is that each time you call, you wait at least an hour or more before you get to talk to someone. AND, if the service person has to come back, you wait a week or so before they come back. I think that Ihave been patient enough. After three service calls, I am still without a properly functioning dishwasher! If you are wise Do Not purchase a service warranty from this... Read More

Don't bother if you would like good customer service. CANNOT get through to anyone on the phone without a looooong wait. I spent 30 minutes waiting for billing and then they told me they would transfer to someone else with my issue. Another 30 minutes. Do not expect them to reply through their e-mail system or postal mail. The WORST OF THE WORST in terms of customer service. Quite satisfied with American Home Warranty. Better rates and customer service.

AHS is a good Home Warranty Company but it has allowed certain Contract Vendors to give Company bad rep. I submitted Service on Microwave Range 11/14/17 and still hasn't been replaced or repaired as of 11/26/17. The Service time for this item is unbelievable and Customer Service hasn't been great with AHS.

I Gee AWFUL SERVICE!!!!!! I have never had such a negative experience!! I was wondering if this was a legitimate company. My heat went out, called to report the problem and told that wait time was 1 hour. After waiting, and given a service person, I waited all day waiting for him to show, finally I called him. He told me that I wasn't in his serving area, and that AHS said they would call me. No one never contacted me. Called back, waiting another hour, then told that my order was in cue waiting to locate a technician. I asked for a supervisor, was told it would be 24 hrs, which I never received a call from. My heat went out on Sunday and I was assigned a service person on... Read More

Your service is horrific, I am putting in a dispute with my credit card service because I have tried to contact you for over one month and complain about your service, Hold times are ovr 2 hrs and no one picks up. Put in request to fix my stove and was told it would take 3 weeks to look at, So I cancelled this request and had someone come out the same day for 69 dollars and purchased my own stove. You have no email address and the only way to contact you is by phone. I have been on line for hours and finally found this platform. Cancel my contract immediately, 54 cypress bridge place , bear Delaware. Ypu have no idea how to do business

There is now way that American Home Shield is a 10/10 company. The complaints against them and their vendors paint a vastly different picture. In fact the comments here are negative too. The vendors they choose for warranty repairs are hated too. The common theme is that the warranty work was denied due to a report from the vendor. I have caught several vendors falsifying reviews too. I documented at reviewfraud (dot)org too. I even found a fake review for AHS too. Twitter is filled with countless complaints of lack of service too.
