Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Do not buy this warranty. If you can stand waiting for 1 hour only to be disconnected by the system you are better off going elsewhere. They claim they will not inspect your home and still be guaranteed service. My house was built in the 1950's with a floor furnace. I needed it repaired and wanted to charge me over $1500 for modifications because they would not locate a temperature switch. Even their contractor said that AHS was almost impossible to call without having wait over 90 minutes.

My furnace is not working and i am without heat from last 3 days. They make you wait more than an hour on hold to talk to someone. From last 3 days I have already spent more than 6 to 8 hours by talking to AHS and technician etc. It seems the furnace needs replacement but AHS is asking me to pay $625, on top of my service call fee $100. If I will pay lot of money I don't know what for I am paying AHS monthly warranty service fee. I want to talk to manager level person who can solve my issue amicably but the customer care is not transferring the call, says nothing can be changed. Previously I had the warranty with other company but I never had any issue. Now I am regretting why I took the... Read More

I’ve been without a furnace in the cold for one month and two days. After a million of phone calls that lasted holding for hours to AHS I get a call telling me that they are offering me a cash out of 526.00 dollars to get my gas furnace replaced. I said that won’t buy a furnace and AHS representative said AHS can. Don’t know about you guys but I,m sure you can’t find a contractor that will install s furnace for 526.00. This company is a joke. Don’t waste your time or money.. if you have service with AHS RUN RUN RUN.

Patricia F Fontana, CA December 27, 2017 This is my second horrible repair experience with AHS. The first bad experience was this past summer during a heat wave involving my upstairs AC unit. This repair was finished after at a minimum of 6 repair visits. At present I am dealing with a busted Hot Water Heater which is a major inconvenience. There is no real information coming from either the repair company or AHS. Every is passing the buck with inconsistent replies from each party. I have been without a proper working Water Heater since Dec 17, 2018. I have been told by the repair company that there might not be anything done until Jan 1, 2018. This is unacceptable and... On bace of those reviews I sing a contact with AHS. When garage door broke, I was overseen, my tenants contacted me that , they can open door. I did opened clam and technician came first time and stated cleary to a tenants, that he will write to AHS , that motor is old and need to replace. I waited for a 3 weeks, no one contacted, me till I called. I asked about status of my lame, AHS, stated that, motor is working find , but they just need to replace the opener on the wall. I told them , its not what technician stated. The offered me second onion for charge of $75, I refused, because it was clearly delivered to AHS, that garage motor need to be replaced. They keep offering to me second... Read More

I have read many of the other comments and have to agree that the service they provide is awful. The wait time on the phone is excessive and the service person when you finally reach them is not responsive to your problem. I have been without my oven for over 2 months waiting for the parts, and then when they arrived, the oven still did not work. I was told by the technician that it should be replaced. But today ahs told me it can be repaired, but not until after 1/23. My other option is to accept an offer of a check that would not cover 1/5th of the cost of replacement. Bad company, bad service.

Sorriest company I've ever dealt with. Being put on hold for 58 minutes for the second time in a day is totally unacceptable. The lady I dealt with was courteous but you better have a lot of time to wait when you call in for a service call. We turned in for repairs to our Geo-thermal heat on a Sunday and still hadn't heard from a contractor by Wednesday night. Waiting 3 days in December for heat and a cold front with 0 degree windchill coming on Christmas Day tends to get me concerned and frustrated. To top it off, she told me they didn't have a contractor in my area that could work for them. Come on, 3 days and they hadn't gotten back with me to tell me that. They left me out in... Read More

Horrible, I have dealt with AHS for 9 years. I have had nothing but headaches trying to have a pool heater repaired for the last two years. Mind you I started this plan in a brand NEW home with new appliances and everything. I actually even replaced all my appliances four years ago because I wanted to upgrade builder grade. This year I find out I am having to renew in a "special plus plan" doubling my premium. When I called and yes it takes hours to speak with customer service I was told I had 60,000 dollars in cost to their company. I have never had a major repair to any system in my house. A few appliance calls over 9 years that I saw the bill charged to AHS, was maybe 200 dollars,... Read More
