Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

i have been using american home sheild for over a year and i am not happy at all. You may ask why? anwer is it would take over an hour and 50 mints to talk to the customer service and they use contractors who provide poor service. it would take week till someone calls you to schedul a vist and then its another 3 day to get the job done. No more i can spend my money with some other companies.

AHS HORRIBLE SERVICE.... I have been on-hold for 2hrs and 7 minutes the first night after putting a several request in, when I finally do connect the young lady said "sorry for the delay and I will do my best to assist you" great, explain the fact that I WAS WITHOUT HEAT during a time the temperature dropped below 10 degrees. Asked for assistance on getting a hold of contractor to get them to come out but best she could do or say was that the following day I would be contacted. I suffered through two night of FREEZING COLD TEMPERATURE just to get a call from a contractor that said I will have my office schedule you as soon as possible. I informed contractor about NOT having heat in the... Read More

We lived in Texas and AHS was wonderful, fast and easy to use. I highly do NOT recommend this company if you live in a more rural setting outside and farther away from a huge city. We now live in a small town in WA state not too far from Seattle or Tacoma, however trying to get anything fixed has been a complete nightmare for us! Hold times on phone are usually around 30-1Hour 30 mins. There is NO call backs. You have to sit on hold for that long! Next, It takes about an average of 2+ months to get stuff actually repaired. This is normal for small cities. So if your fridge doesn't work; your better off buying a new or used CL fridge while waiting to get your other fixed. It's NOT FAST OR... Read More

I'm in the midst of my first experience with American Home Shield. Our furnace began making a loud bang when it turned on, so I called to have it looked at. On January 2, I was assigned a contractor whom I spoke with that day (Tuesday). He said he would come Wednesday or Thursday, which was fine, since we did not feel this was an emergency but definitely something we should have checked out. He called me Wednesday and said he wouldn't be able to come until Friday. Would 10-12 be OK? I said no because my husband would like to be here and he had a doctor's appointment at 10. He said he would be here between 12-1, which I said would be fine. When it got to be after 1:00, I called him,... Read More

It will be 6 days of no toilets, showers, etc. for my family. I have reported the issue and still no resolution or service provided. I pay my bill on time (automatic payment), this is my first claim with American Home Shield (AHS), and I have done my part as a customer. However, AHS has failed to provided service at my residence or escalated the issue as needed. Due my residence having a water drainage/stoppage issue and paired with the sub freezing temperatures in the area I fear of additional possible damages (burst pipes, leaking water, etc.) that may result from AHS negligence in resolving the issue in a reasonable time frame.

I was on hold for 1 hour and 25 minutes. Hung up and called back and waited 15 minutes and hung up again. I have again tried and waited. This place contracted me out to such a horrible Appliance company. I’m short, for past year and half, that company customer service has gone bad. Very disappointed.

Let's just say, as a loyal customer with multiple policies since 1986 - I will NOT be renewing my warranty moving forward. They have lost their customer focus and their quality service levels. While I appreciate the ability to conduct my business/request via phone & pc, when we had an emergency (on more than one occasion) - I was on hold for over an HOUR trying to reach a human. This coupled with the fact that the service companies they are contracting with are subpar. Is there no due diligence on these companies?? Because to your customers -- they ARE AHS. While I have been happy with the actual warranty coverage for the most part -- I will be going with a local warranty provider... Read More

Worst company for home warranty, I tried two different time to get broken appliance repair and AHS just find a way to deny the claim. So AHS is just a rip off company to get your money please stay far away from AHS. I was on the phone for hours with them and when i told them to cancel my service They took another payment of 61.32 and said it was a cancellation fee. WOW take 61.32 for two years plus 75.00 service fee when i make a claim don't honor the claim and still charge me 61.32 cancellation fee. I think this is a home base company just a big SCAM!!!
