The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

THE PROVIDER WHO WORKED ON MY FURNACE HAD TO COME BACK AGAIN AFTER THE FIRST CALL TO FIX MY FURNACE. MY FURNACE STILL ISN'T WORKING LIKE IT SHOULD SOMETIMES. AND MY BILLING WAS TERRIBLE. I WAS BILLED BY YOU SEVERAL TIMES AND I HAD ALREADY PAID THE FEE TO THE PROVIDER IN WHICH I DID NOTIFY YOU OF. YET YOU CONTINUALLY BILLED ME GIVING ME LATE PAYMENT NOTICES , EVEN THREATENING TO CUT OFF MY SERVICE. I CALLED YOU SEVERAL TIMES TO STRAIGHTEN OUT THE BILL AND WE FINALLY GOT IT DONE. SO MY EXPERIENCE WASN'T VERY GOOD THIS TIME AND I HOPE THERE WON'T BE A REPEAT.

The ease of scheduling a repair technician was easy, if you like scheduling by computer. The repair tech contacted us promptly and made an appointment. He was on-time for the scheduled appointment, and called 30-min in advance of arriving. Repairs were quickly diagnosed and completed. My only suggestion for improvement: having used AHS twice now (1-A/C and 1-electrician), I looked up the companies AHS used on a few on-line consumer review sites. Awful service .... I was sold a complete bill of goods. They send over incompetent companies that in many cases cannot speak english and have no idea what they are doing. I have tried to place phone calls to this company on multiple occasions with no luck. Thus usual wait time if you can get through is about 30-45 minutes. If you look on their paper work or their websites you often can find 5-6-7 different phone numbers to phone and all that ends up happening is you get into the same queue with no success. I just spoke to a lady after being on hold for 35 minutes and she immediately transferred me AGAIN telling me she cannot help me. This is one of the worst customer service... Read More

Horrible to deal with. My AC unit went out. I had a top of the line "Trane" unit. I was told by American Home Shield on calls and through their online chat that they would replace it with the same unit. When the install came it was a lower brand unit. I went back and forth with them saying I was told specifically multiple times that I would be getting a similar unit. I spoke with a supervisor who agreed that if I was told that multiple times, they will honor it and get us a Trane. They had to pull the conversations and it would take a day or two. 3 days later I called them back (Now 3 weeks after the original call to them in the middle of summer). HAVE CALLED FOUR (4) TIMES TO TELL YOU MY PAST DUE INVOICE HAS BEEN PAID AND IT STILL IS SHOWING PAST DUE ON MY ACCOUNT. EVERY TIME I CALL I SPEND AT LEAST 20+ MINUTES ON HOLD!! CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIBLE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD AND TOLD MY ACCOUNT IS CURRENT YET STILL RECEIVE PAST DUE E-MAILS!! I am totally impressed with how AHS has handled 99% of my past claims; unfortunately, I am dissatisfied with having to pay 90% (only $10.00/lb is covered by AHS when freon can cost anywhere from $50-$150/lb)or more of freon costs when this product is necessary for my A/C unit. This turns into a MAJOR expense when you have a unit that holds 10-15 lbs and has leaked out completely. I am aware of another home warranty company that now covers the entire cost for freon. I'm sure if they are able to work this into their coverage plan, AHS is as successful in the home warranty field, and should be able to provide significantly better coverage in this area than they currently do!

Unfortunately AHS does not care or expedite parts/service if you have someone in your home with serious medical needs. It's ok to go without AC in the summer in SC when a person had MS and very limited mobility. More than 2 weeks to replace a coil in my son's AC unit! No consideration of this issue!!!! Also AHC does not read/follow their own contract. "Dismantling" a hot water heater in my attic does not mean taking it apart to get it out of that space. Nope. The old one was left up there with their refusal to "dismantle" it.

Absolutely TERRIBLE! Customer service is absolutely ridiculous. They have sent someone out to fix my A/C twice already and it is still not fixed. It's really pleasant in 100 degree weather, but they have unlimited amounts of time until they have to resolve the issue. Trying to get a hold of anyone requires a 5+ hour wait and if they can't help you and need to find out more information on their end they are not authorized to call you back. Your only option is to call and sit and another 5 hours on hold. They told the repair company that they were not allowed to diagnose and fix the problem because it was a refrigerant leak and the warranty doesn't cover that so they want me to continue to... Very difficult to get through to them. I sit on hold for quite some time. I've emailed people within the company, and sometimes I get a response, but other times I don't. We used them for an a/c issue, and the technician they sent tried to upsell us. Their quote was for $1500. We ultimately found a provider to take care of the issue and we spent $300. I'm glad we did our homework instead of trusting American Home Shield.
