Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We have been with ahs for several years and used their services and was satisfied with the service. My bigest complaint is that the times i have used your services, i have had to wait i think over 45 minutes before a real person came on line to hear my needs. Very very poor service. I wouldn't expect y ou to respond to my comments. Robert l. Hotton

I signed up with this company last Nov. '16 due to the fact that the company I had been with First American for over 16yrs, began to not care much about its customers. Well, I am now finding that AHS cares even less, if that's possible!!! I put in a service request for Central Air conditioner over a week ago, and when I found that the one and only technician Global HVAC had could not come out to me house for a week, I tried to contact AHS to maybe find another vendor that could get here sooner, I was on hold for 1hr. 15min. when I gave up. I contacted Global HVAC the morning of my appt. and was told that their one and only technician for my area had "car trouble" and all his appts.... Read More

My central AC went out of service in May 2017. According to their contract the service provider must call back within 48 hours. When first contact is made, my appointment was set for 4 days later, six days after my original request during a entire week of over 100 degrees . The technician performed a routine maintenance for which I paid additional. Only a couple of days later, no AC. A few days later the tech returned to tell me I need a new fan. American Home Shield needed to first approve the order, then he could order the fan. 10 days later he returned and installed. All this during another week of 100 degrees. About 2 weeks later, no AC. 2 days later a different service provider... Read More

The vendors AHS sent to my house were unskilled in their trade. They would put a "bandaid" on an issue and a few months later the same problem would arise. One example is an air conditioner unit that was leaking. The company would clime out and stop the leak but the problem would come back again a few months later. I would request service again and the same thing occured. Finally I called out an ac company not connected to AHS. The company said I would neeed a new unit because the leake had gone on too long and resulted in rust. I will also have to replace the flooring underneath the ac unit because so much water leaked over the two years .

I filed a claim on my wash machine back in June, it was fixed, but it broke again in August. I filed another claim, but did not get a call to schedule an appointment. I refiled a claim for the wash machine and a second claim for my dish washer, which also broke in August. I received a call on the wash machine only from Whirlpool, who is subcontracting the work out to a local company who's first appointment wasn't until Sept. 26th. Whirlpool did not book the appointment or reserve it and when I called the local company Whirlpool referred to, I got a message that they are not taking any new appointments until after October 1st. When I went onto the American Home Shield site today to see... Read More

Very disappointed with the service. I have been with AHS for 14 years and its a shame to pay a monthly fee every month only to find out when you really need service...there is no urgency and waiting on hold for customer service over 45 minutes is shameful. My refrigerator when out last Friday. I receive a call from the repair contractor that they have the part but they won't be able to get out until another 5 days. Another weekend without a fridge. I am online now looking for another Home Warranty.

Worst experience and headache I have ever dealt with personally and as a business owner for 9 years. This process started on 6/23/17 and now it's 9/7/17 and the problem with my HVAC is still not resolved. I was referred to a company for service of which was completed and diagnosed. AHS (American home shield) authorized the work for a new furnace and AC unit. Fast forward 6 weeks for parts to be ordered I find out that the company referred to me by AHS has never done work in my county and were not aware of the protocol that my county requires a permit for this work. It's important to note that I have 2 children under 2 during this time. Because the original service provide doesn't do... Read More
