Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I'm so glad I signed up with AHS about 15 years ago. I've never had a problem with their service. I am a widow and cannot afford to buy new appliances. I'm just hoping they don't keep going up with their monthly amount, or the service fee, especially since their corporate taxes were reduced. Good job AHS!

The service people they use are very good and timely. American Home Shield is damn near impossible to deal with. I’d give them 1 star but I don’t want the tech to get the 1 star, only the warranty people. Took me almost 6 weeks for them to finally replace my dishwasher after they closed my repair case even though it wasn’t repairable. Again the techs are a 5, AHW is a 1 - and to boot I emailed 2 times specifically asking for a phone call and never got one.

This company is a scam. It is a hastle everytime you call. It never feels they are there to help you or serve you. Our last request for our AC has been ongoing 6 months now. They act like our appliances we added in 2015 were never covered. They do not allow you to speak with a manager or supervisor. This is beyond absurd. I cannot imagine continuing with this company.

Garage door springs broke called AHS with claim, contractor called and scheduled an apt for the next day, all parts and labor was covered and repair was done within 48 hrs and only paid the $75 service fee.

I have never seen such a scam. My oven has been broken for a month. Sears repair came out and said it needed new parts--$900 of parts for a 15-year old stove. For the last week I have been trying to get an answer about a cash out, since the part they sent to repair it was refurbished and it was defective. I have spoken with 6 customer service people. One of them told me I couldn't have the cash out option unless the technician put it in their report. 4 of them said I could have cash out and they had put the request in. By call #4 I was asking for a supervisor. I was told no supervisors were available, the first time I was told they were in a meeting. The second time I was told... Read More

They left you on hold for an average of 2hours every time I called. They sent out incompetent service workmen. I ended up calling out a company of my own that did the job right the first time. I am sure I would not use this company ever again

This company has won the award for having the worst customer service in the world. I have been waiting on a part for my dishwasher since January 22. It is now 2/24. It is impossible to speak with a supervisor. No one knows anything. I think all of the customer service agents have degrees in RUDENESS. No supervisor is ever available and will NEVER return any calls. They sent D&J appliances out to repair the dishwasher(this company is awful) if anyone ever needs service please refuse this company. The wrong part was set twice. The tech said it was AHS they said it was the tech. Anyway this entire ordeal has been mental draining and very time consuming. All in all please have... Read More

Service is excellent, though not always timely. I have a older furnace and it often takes the selected service provider inordinate time to procure parts. i.e. four days and the outside temperature is below freezing. Provider would prefer to replace the unit but their hands are tied by AHS
