Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Service is always slow, I have to wait on hold for over 30 minutes to an hour just speak to customer service, and more than once the companies they have sent we’re horrible and they kept using these companies despite multiple compaints from us.

If you enjoy long hold-times spent waiting on the phone only to have the agent answer, tell you "her system is down" transfer you to another agent, who simply drops the call, and a Home Warranty company that is unresponsive, moves at a glacial pace, and will attempt to get out of fixing anything by using every trick in the book-then American Home Shield is for you.

Customer service is horrible. I have been trying to resolve a plumbing issue since September of last year. The vendor, JUST PLUMBING, says they will call me with updates but never do. AHS representatives tell me they will call back with followup information, but do not. This is the worst plumber I have ever dealt with and AHS's customer service is terrible. I have waited up to 2 hours on the phone for them to answer. They also owe me $75.00 for an over billing I have never received.

We have used our warranty on several occasions. From A/C work to Dryer repair. We have always spoken with wonderful reps and the repairs are done quickly. We personal feel like the warranty cost has paid for it self and was well worth it.

Very easy to report and get appropriate repair info for problem. Had a "diiferent" warrantee company prior to AHS, NO COMPARISON! Would highly recomend AHS to anyone.

Heater went out and American Home Shield had someone out immediately. They did a great job and even came back to make sure everything was working great. Thank you AHS.

I have had AHS policies for close to thirty years and have found that as the years pass the service deteriorates by leaps and bounds. My most recent experience is typical of the way it has been for the past several years. I called in an air conditioning order for a place in south Florida that is a rental property. American Home Shield sent a repair person who claimed it would take at least six weeks to get the standard part to repair the central a/c system. The contractor insisted that they had checked with every distributor for York Air Conditioners in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami/Dade Counties in search of the part. The contractor insisted that they had contacted the manufacturer,... Read More

I gave AHS (American Home Shield) a maximum of only two stars for SEVERAL reasons: 1. We had to use AHS the first time to repair our KitchenAid refrigerator ice maker on September 11, 2017. AHS sent out a contractor (AT APPLIANCE) who came out FIVE (5) times and replaced three components (ice sensor, two wire harnesses which were not the problem). These five home calls to fix our ice maker took a span over two months and DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. AHS had to resend another contractor in November 2017 to finish the job. Lake Appliance finally replaced the part (which took another 6 weeks since the part had to be ordered). You would think AHS would have competent contractors to fix & repair... Read More

I’m not sure these excellent ratings are coming from, but every time I call them about a system it’s not covered. Like my trash compactor, they said that’s not covered yet above you claim it is. The icemaker in the refrigerator, they said that’s not covered. Even though it is a part of the refrigerator. So on and so forth. It seems every time we call them, the effect that item is not covered under the warranty . Also many other companies they send out milk you by doing shoddy repairs and then I has to be redone just as the 90 day warranty expires, creating a situation where you have to pay the co-pay again.

Charged twice company will not listen on water heater it took a handyman and three trips From an electrician who fixed wrong thing to finally figure out it was the thermostat and I've been a customer for years and never had a claim but now they want to ruin my credit for $125 second charge after I was told there would be one charge to fix the heater and customer service rude. The electrician even put a circuit breaker on the heat pump instead of the heater. Handyman said nothing wrong with heater I had no hot water from before Christmas to after New Year and was simple thermostat. I AM A Complaining 77 Year OLd On fixed Income My Money is Valuable
