Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Customer service is poor with wait times at 10-15 minutes. Then you get an agent who doesnt read past notes and still wants you to pay service fee. Supervisors are worse. Find a different company who knows a little bit about costumer service.

Have had service for two years and had good experience with AC service; however, I had a small leak dripping very slow from a fire sprinkler in ceiling that apparently is not covered. I was very disappointed. All other plumbing for everything is covered and not clearly excluded at all in policy. I would have opted to purchase additional coverage but they did not offer me anything. Worst part is waiting on hold for over an hour on multiple phone calls before even being informed of possible or excluded service!

This company has gone from great to below average in the matter of a few years. As many southerners know air-conditioners are short lived and are a major concern. In the past when you made a claim your deductible was $50 and they took care of your problem. No additional charges for freon, haul away, etc. Now deductibles are $75 and rising, freon is outrageous (R-410A) and they use inferior products. i.e. Goodman instead of name brand. The so-called "cost of doing business" is not good enough for the smart consumer. You can do better AHS!

I LOVE this company and will happily pay their annual fee EVERY year! They have never failed me. I place a service call online and I hear from their contractor the next morning. Their contractors call immediately, make an agreed upon appointment and then call again when they're on their way. I then receive a call or email asking if I'm satisfied sometimes the same day, or the day after the repair. This same service occurs EVERY time. And there has been multiple times that the problem cannot be repaired so they have replaced my oven, my air conditioner/heat pump and my water heater. They just tell me they will have to replace it, that's it non-repairable, I don't even have a chance to... Read More

I was pleased with the service that AHS provided. Although the initial company they identified to perform the service apparently was out of business and never returned emails or calls, after identifying this problem the AHS representative I spoke with quickly signed me up to get service performed by Sears. The Sears technician was prompt, professional, and very efficient in performing the service needed. There was no hassle at the time the technician performed the service since AHS covered the costs. ----- I was slightly less pleased with how billing was handled on the AHC side of things. Although I had been told at the time of requesting service that a fee would need to be paid for... Read More

Wait times have become way too long. I have been on hold in multiple occasions recently for hours until I literally give up and just hang up. I had an emergency request few weeks back and one currently as we speak. I placed a service request online but clearly you guys didn't bother to put an emergency request option so it will take days before my issue is resolved. I am a long time customer as well just FYI. Customer service for AHS has gone done a lot.

I have been a customer for 14 years. My air conditioner went out and I had to wait 3 1/2 weeks to get it replaced. One department did not think it was necessary to rush order the unit because the temperature had not been over 105. I had to take my kids someplace else to stay because it was 90 degrees in my home. I called several times to try and talk with the department about getting it rushed but nobody ever answered the phone. A few times I was on hold for 30 minutes each time.

I had a flooding water heater that was obviously an emergency situation. I have had to call into American Home Shield on 4 different occasions and each time my wait time on hold was more than 47 minutes - NO EXAGERATION!!! It has been a week and my water heater is still not fixed!!! Can you imagine trying to function as a family and have no hot water for a week? American Home Shield has HORRIBLE customer service and to make matters worse the plumber they scheduled to help us NEVER answers their phone. So I have a warranty company that wasted hours of my time while I hold to get a run around over and over and they work with service providers that never answer their phone or return... Read More

Well worth the peace of mind, especially if buying or owning a home that hasn't had many updates over the years, or has existing appliances. We also have a pool under our coverage, and this alone has probably been worth the investment. When we purchased our home, one of the HVAC units soon failed, and the repair was covered (outside of the refrigerant costs). We have averaged a call per year on the pool over 4 years. I have used AHS in every home I have purchased over the past 20+ years, and have always felt it was worth the cost. The contractors used almost always get the job corrected with the first visit The only problem AHS appears to have is clearing out a fee charge when a call is... Read More
