Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Had to have washer fixed. Unfixable! Took AHS over 10 days to "decide " to replace. In the mean time, no washer, with a wife who washes everyday! July 3, 2017, air conditioner goes out. Serviceman tells my wife compressor is gone, cost $1500 for them to replace and fill with freon. Made a point of saying air conditioner was very old. Also advised he would put a new one in for $3500. So we order the compressor. That took over 10 days of no air conditioner. When they did put it in, did not use enough to freon, but world come out to fix in another 5 days. At that point, paid someone to fix their screw up. I absolutely, positively would NOT recomend this service!

Very helpful. I think everyone should have it. This missing part is maintenance. Home owners are naive about what needs to be done in order to have the full benefits of the equipment insurance. I had a friend rejected for AC replacement because he didn't provide enough service records for his unit.

It took over a month to resolve my claim. It was impossible to reach someone on the phone without an hour + wait and then I was hung up on twice. When I finally did get in touch with someone and corresponded with them via email I didn't hear back for 2 weeks.

I believe when an air conditioning system goes out we whould not wait a week to get it fixed. Parts need to come in faster for customer consideration. How is this done in the winter when it is cold????

I am a disappointed AHS customer due to their billing and retention policy. When I first signed with AHS I had an older A/C system which still used Freon. My calls for service on that unit after several years caused my premium to double according to AHS. I had only one other type of call on another covered item (a microwave). I accepted AHS premium hike explanation and understood their decision. I have had maybe one A/C call since that hike several years ago. Today I installed a brand new Trane heat pump/furnace/AC unit. I called AHS to see about reducing my premium. I was flatly told, that once the premium had been raised there was no circumstance under which AHS could reduce it. I... Read More

I can say I have a had a very, very frustrating experience with ASH. It took over a week to get someone out to my house to fix a small water problem. They then contacted a company to fix the water damage and they never showed .They then called me and told me they were sending another company that then sent a technician out ... he was here about 10 minutes . He said he had to get approval from AHS. That's now been over a week , and a month since the first person came out. If you've ever tried to call this company, my minimum hold time has been 40 minutes . It would have been easier and less costly and less frustrating just to have paid someone myself. I am on hold again now, and... Read More

I have had AHS for 13 years and have always had good experiences when I have needed the service. They use good contractors and are very easy to work with. All insurance companies should be so good.

I use the phone and website to request repair orders. Both easy to use. On a rare occasion should I need to talk with a representative, phone wait can be lengthy, however, problem is always solved and in a kindly, professional manner. NEVER disappointed and the Contractors are neighbors of our community. All work has met our expectations and more. Having been with AMS for almost 11 years now, It's been my pleasure to recommend AMS To Family and Friends. You can't argue how much coverage you receive for such a low cost, as long as the Deductible remains the same or lower, there are no reason for me not to keeput AMS Another 10 plus years, just 1, AMS has my back!

We have called for five different problems on things on our home and only once was our problem covered. We still had to pay $75 each time. The latest thing that wasn't covered was vents to our boilers, even though vents are supposedly covered but they said our vents weren't the kind of vents that are covered. My husband and I both tried numerous times to call before hand to see if it would be covered but we received pre-recorded messages saying that the wait time for a representative would be over one hour. Since we had no hot water, we had no choice but to pay the $75 and make a claim. We wasted the money because even though vents are covered, our type of vent isn't! Very unhappy with... Read More
