Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have been with this company over 15 years and have used company perhaps less than 10 times. I am a working adult, third party contracting is great but they need to contract with companies providing services on weekends and after 5pm. I work Monday-Friday from 8-5, inconvenient to take a day off after I have paid this company so much over the years. This company must come into future working professionals can not take off to have a service contractor in his or her home, just because contractors do not work on weekends. It cost me more to take off, pay for yearly service, then pay the fee for repair, versus just locating a licensed contractor as my financial advisor indicated who I can... Read More

Why am I being charged for two plumbers ,when one handled s detail last call? Coperuperlis plumber. And why am I being charged before service is completed when requested after work done. Is this the special Cal rate double the plumbers and charge before done. Feeling deliberately ripped off and disrespected. Dear AHS retention department, I have been with them for 6 years and I have been disappointed with them the last few years. The ability to communicate with them is near impossible and the claims are being denied. If a covered appliance is functioning but not properly, then they don't do anything. My wife and I both work like most people today and getting to talk to AHS and get answers is very difficult. If this is the best, what am I going to do about a home warranty company?

Honest review, not one filtered on the AHS website. Read the very fine print in this warranty - there are so many exclusions had I known before closing I would have shopped around. Some of the contractors they send will lie about work performed to make themselves look good to AHS, but you will still have a problem and/or and exclusion. It makes me very angry that they take advantage of consumers. This issue was a plumbing stoppage at 35 feet from the drain, which the technician told them he snaked through the toilet to 25 feet (which is not possible, BTW.) This was my only request for service in two years and I was definitely taken advantage of -- I've paid $1,400 over two years to be... Read More

Horrible service...I have been trying to get my kitchen appliances serviced for past 3 months and neither AHS nor the contractor Pro Appliance Services are responding to my issues. I have gone on social media as well to try to get some help but AHS is just not addressing. If I could give a negative star I would do that. I am being harassed by this company.

TERRIBLE COMPANY! as of right now we have 2 feet of sewage in our basement and this has been since Sunday afternoon at 3pm... i was told by their representative that the soonest their contractor can make it to my home is "possibly" Tuesday... now mind you we have 2 FEET OF RAW SEWAGE in our home! Representatives are very rude and put you on endless hold if they choose not to help you!

Had AHS for 4 years and I had an AC claim and I was relieved that they they were going to cover the repairs but once I found out about the coolant cost and the minuscule amount that AHS covers I was livid. $800 for coolant is a very high expense and the part that fuels my anger is that AHS knows that the coolant is way over priced and only covers $10 per pound (cost to the company is about $12 per pound and the company charges $100 per pound). Knowing and partnering with this price gouging tactic has dropped my sense of financial security and I am saving to self insure once I can.

I have always been happy working with this company for the first 5 years I had this company, but this last couple months I had a plumber out to replace a broken garbage disposal, and they required a credit card to book the appointment (first time this has been a requirement), sent him out, billed my card, and have been sending threatening letters and emails the last 2 months regarding non payment, over due payment. I have been on the phone with them 4 times to get it cleared up and they refuse to transfer me to a supervisor, they hardly speak English, tell me that the request to remove me from the list has not been processed yet, they will send an expedite request and ignore any further... These folks are very hard to reach by phone and the plumbers they send are not very good. The plumber who fixed our septic ejection pump was very discourteous; the plumber sent to replace our jetted tub pump said it would require either cutting a hole in the exterior wall of the house, or completely removing the tub. Neither was necessary. A private plumber replaced it without any of those bizarre proposals. Then the plumber they sent to replace our recirculating pump put it in backwards and then when he reversed it, he didn’t know how to solder copper piping. We are not very pleased with AHS.

American Home Shield sends their customer service calls to India. I have had some one here for my refrigerator 5times, threw away food twice and still trying to get someone on the line that can make the call to replace the unit. The reason to buy a warranty when buying a home is because you don’t know how appliances will work, really frustrated that I can’t talk to someone in the USA that can help. You should not have to throw everything in the garbage multiple times to be covered and have the appliance replaced. GOOD LUCK IF YOU PAY FOR THEIR SERVICE!
